Unlike exaggerated portrayals in the movies, open adoption means only that birth mother and adoptive parents communicate to whatever extent they are comfortable. In an open adoption, birth mother and adoptive parents may talk by phone or meet for lunch or form so close a bond that the adoptive parents attend the birth. Steven will start the communication by encouraging birth mothers and adoptive parents to pass messages to each other through him. He believes an open adoption gives both parties a chance to form a special bond that eases the infant adoption process for birth mothers and adoptive parents.

Steven and his wife Marci, his office administrator, adopted their first of two sons, 20 years ago.
